Nancy Murphree Davis

Nancy Murphree Davis is an artist that works in many mediums. Originally from Alabama, Nancy is an Air Force spouse in the DC area for the second time in her husband’s career. She has lived all over the United States and her work often depicts scenes from these experiences. She has a degree in fine arts from Auburn University.

Artist Statement: “Creativity knows no limit. I work in many mediums and often combine them.

My watercolor paintings are a cacophony of color. I mean to convey beauty in the mundane or give a whole new perspective to the already interesting or beautiful. I am drawn to industrial towers and structures, architectural facades, and landscapes with bold shapes or anything with a strong pattern. I work from photographs (usually my own), which I manipulate digitally to simplify and abstract. When I take out the paints, I use an extensive palette, but rhythm and repetition make a harmonious melody of the color. I often flip flop negative space with positive space. This adds interest and creates a strong visual path.

Besides watercolor, I adore printmaking, especially monotypes. Although some of these monotypes are complete off the press, they sometimes serve as a rich, textured backdrop for mixed media pieces that contain etchings, drawings, watercolors, collage or on occasion image or emulsion transfers from old school pack film.
Images in my monotypes are usually from nature. I spent a lot of time playing outdoors as a child and enjoy reminiscing while drawing and painting creatures I knew well from those times.

The making of art is mostly about exploration, so I continue to try additional mediums and materials enjoying self-discovery while producing finished art that doesn’t settle for ordinary.”
